Since its inauguration on November 1st, 2017, Michelson Hall has already become a world-class center of the accelerating convergence between the biosciences and engineering, conducting cutting-edge bioscience and bio-engineering research that will lead to breakthrough innovations for advancing human health. Designed by HOK Architects, the 190,000-square-foot building organization is designed to facilitate efficient and highly flexible research spaces as well as create areas to foster collaboration and convergence across scientific disciplines.

A hub of scientific breakthroughs in health and related fields, the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience is bringing together an interdisciplinary team of researchers -originally from within the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering- whose goal is to fast-track detection and cure of diseases by turning biological sciences into a quantitative and predictive science.

Advances in the understanding of living systems spurred by the genome revolution, coupled with improvements in computing technology, have positioned humanity for significant achievements in the biological sciences in the near future. At the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, scientists are collaborating to translate those advances to the real world by accelerating the invention of new life-saving biomedical devices.

Now in its second year, the center serves as a new home to many of USC’s key faculty, including USC Dornsife former Dean Steve A. Kay [1] — an innovative researcher whose investigations have contributed to the understanding of the genetic basis for circadian rhythms, which serve as the body’s clock.

Among the other scientists in residence are Andrea Armani [2], Raymond C. Stevens [3], Peter Kuhn [4] and Scott Fraser [5], Provost Professor of Biological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering, whose work includes the development of microscopes capable of imaging the beating heart of an embryonic organism as it grows.

Also newly located at the USC Michelson Center are the Bridge Institute [6] whose goals is to disrupt conventional thinking by converging knowledge to achieve radical progress in improving the human condition, and the Agilent Center Of Excellence In Biomolecular Characterization [7], a partnership between USC and Agilent to accelerate fundamental discoveries in life sciences research.

Convergent Bioscience on Campus

The USC Michelson Center stands in the southwest quadrant of the University Park Campus, home to most of the science and engineering buildings, and -when at full capacity- will house 20 to 30 principal investigators with laboratories employing hundreds of researchers and students. Complete with state-of-the-art flexible labs, a Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis, a nanofabrication facility and a suite of microscopy imaging technology that can take precise measurements inside of cells, the facility is expected to help draw even more talented researchers to push the frontiers of science at USC.

Although Dr. Gary K. Michelson did not attend or work at USC, he was impressed by their desire to create a collaborative research space, gathering experts from across fields to work together on groundbreaking research initiatives. Steve A. Kay, former dean of the Dornsife College and now Director of Convergent Bioscience and Provost Professor of Neurology, Biomedical Engineering and Biological Sciences, remarked that his conversations with Dr. Michelson regarding this project enjoyed a natural progression. “It only took a few meetings for us to realize that we really had a shared vision of how we’d like to see convergent science done,” he said of his interactions with Dr. Gary K. Michelson.

A driving force since the inception of the project, USC Emeritus President C. L. Max Nikias displayed its excitment about this collaboration with the Michelson Medical Research Foundation during the original announcement at USC’s Town & Gown on January 13, 2014: “Dr. Michelson’s generous gift is truly visionary, as it will bridge USC’s strengths in a broad range of disciplines, including the sciences, engineering, medicine, mathematics and computer science”. “The new USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience will be a vibrant hub for innovation and will help create a major biomedical research corridor in Southern California” said C. L. Max Nikias.

By constantly seeking new innovations, the scientist teams located at the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience will transform how research is conducted at the intersection of engineering and the life and biomedical sciences.
