Context

USC Michelson Center breaks ground on Thursday, October 23rd 2014

A new era in medical research begins this Thursday, as the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience is breaking ground on the University Park Campus of the University of Southern California (USC).

The building, made possible by a $50 million gift from philanthropist Dr. Gary K. Michelson and his wife Alya, will be located in the southwest quadrant of the University Park Campus, home to the majority of USC’s science and engineering buildings.

As a true leading hub of science and technology and a cornerstone of collaboration, forming a bridge between the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Viterbi School of Engineering, the USC Michelson Center will not only draw the best and brightest students and faculty of USC into its laboratories and innovative work spaces. It will also serve as a new home to key researchers from across the many fields of science and engineering, including two top scientists from the Scripps Research Institute: biochemist Raymond Stevens and biologist Peter Kuhn.

Scheduled to be completed in 2017, the new 190,000-square-foot facility will stand four stories high and include state-of-the-art laboratories as well as a nanofabrication facility (“nanofab”), a suite of microscopy imaging technology, and the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis.

News Anchor: President Max Nikias and several scientists today gathered today to break ground for the new Center for Convergent Bioscience.

The new building was made possible by a 50 million dollar donation from retired orthopedic spinal surgeon Gary Michelson and his wife Alya.

The Michelson Center will bring students and faculty together from the Dornsife School of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Viterbi School of Engineering.

Gary K. Michelson: It’s all about the science and, for a very long time, I’ve been trying to convince people in the universities that they need to do science that will manifest in the real world, in the now, to help people. And that’s just not been the model at the university level.

C.L. Max Nikias: He’s gonna bring together not only prominent scientists, but more importantly, he’s gonna bring together the students because they are the ones that are gonna drive this research with the faculty.

The building will house state of the arts labs for researchers including several teams from the Scripps Institute.

The Michelson Center is set to open in 2017.

USC Biocenter Breaks Ground

USC broke ground on the a research center Thursday.

USC broke ground on a new center for convergent bioscience Thursday. The Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, named for philanthropic donor Gary K. Michelson, is the latest in a long series of efforts by the school to have a larger global impact.

One of the main goals of the Michelson Center is to help turn the field of biological sciences into a more, “quantitative and predictive” means of detecting and curing diseases faster.

Michelson’s $50 million donation marks yet another milestone in USC’s current fundraising campaign. The school hopes to raise over $6 billion in a multiyear effort. As of now the effort has reached over half that amount in private donations.
