...Changing The World

Michelson Fund for NTDs Global Awareness [Sabin].

Project Description

NTDs are a group of 17 parasitic and bacterial infections that are the most common afflictions of the world’s poorest people. They blind, disable and disfigure their victims, trapping them in a cycle of poverty and disease. Research shows that treating NTDs lifts millions out of poverty by ensuring that children stay in school to learn and prosper; by strengthening worker productivity; and by improving maternal and child health.

With the help of strategic counsel and generous financing from Dr. Gary K. Michelson and his wife Alya Michelson of the Michelson Medical Research Foundation, the Sabin Vaccine Institute through the Global Network of Neglected Tropical Disease partnered with His Excellency John A. Kufuor, former president of the Republic of Ghana (2001-2009), to serve as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) Special Envoy. The primary objective of this program is to Support Sabin’s global strategy to raise awareness and mobilize new resources to increase programming and research for NTD control and elimination.

Through new funding from the Michelson Medical Research Foundation in 2013, the Global Network was able to expand the NTD Special Envoy program by engaging three additional individuals to focus primarily on advocacy efforts in the Region of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC): Former president of the Republic of Guatemala Álvaro Enrique Azrú Irigoyen (1996-2000), former president of the Republic of Chili Ricardo Froilán Lagos Escobar (2000-2006), and former Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Director, Dr. Mirta Roses Periago (2003-2013). The primary goal in bringing these three distinguished individuals onboard is to create political will and commitment to integrate, scale up and accelerate NTD prevention and treatment programs toward reaching 2015 elimination targets in LAC.

NTDs Global Awareness: Mobilizing new resources to increase research for NTD control and elimination.

Over the past year, the Global Network has significantly advanced our goals to raise awareness and resources through the NTD Special Envoy Program. The envoys have brought tremendous stature to our global advocacy efforts on NTDs, expanding the reach of NTD advocacy through media interviews, publications and opinion pieces, and the political engagement necessary to close the funding gap for NTD elimination and control.
