The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine [PCRM] was founded in 1985 by Dr. Neal Barnard to promote higher ethical standards in medical research and education and to advance scientific and technological innovations to eliminate animal experimentation. The Physicians Committee also advocates for preventive medicine, especially good nutrition, and conducts clinical research. With a membership of 150,000 health care professionals and concerned citizens, the Physicians Committee works internationally to modernize medical research, prevent animal experimentation, and promote human health.

The use of live animals (primarily dogs) in medical education was once a routinely used method to teach medical students about anatomy, physiology, surgery, and other topics. Today, due in large part to the Physicians Committee’s decades-long campaign, more than 97 percent of medical schools in the U.S. have replaced animals with superior and humane alternatives such as high-fidelity, lifelike and programmable human patient simulators. Work is ongoing to end animal use in all aspects of medical training.

The Physicians Committee also works internationally to end the suffering of animals in product safety testing by promoting humane alternatives that are more protective of human health. As the leader of an international coalition of animal-focused organizations, the Physicians Committee provides expert advice to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which influences the testing policies of 34 member nations.
